ArtsCareKaren Close
BA, BEd (visual arts specialist). Study of Canadian Art History gave Karen an awakened sense of cultural inheritance and the need for creative expression. The history of fine art teaches that although art has value as a commodity, more importantly it is a resource to help us communicate with each other the beliefs and values that will be our legacy. Art is about discovering and sharing who we are. Teaching English and Visual Arts for 30 years also gave Karen deep appreciation for the healing benefits of creative expression. Retirement in 1995 gave her the opportunity to meet vibrant senior Canadian artists and to hear their stories. She resolved to share her discoveries and advocate for the preventative and healing benefits of ArtsCare.

Karen is a painter and author of two books. Unfinished Women: Seeds From My Friendship With Reva Brooks chronicles Close's friendship with the Canadian photographer Reva Brooks. Their efforts created the exhibition Reva Brooks, photographer which opened January, 2000, at The National Gallery of Canada. Spirit of Kelowna: A Celebration of Art and Community profiles a community art project.

In 2005, Karen presented at the international conference of the Society for the Arts in Healthcare, Edmonton, AB, and in 2006 at the Canadian Society for Education through Art, Winnipeg, MA. Her heART FIT classes at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, Kelowna, 9:30am every Tuesday, lead participants to "honour the urge to create Š for ourselves and for others."

Lee Claremont is of Mohawk and Irish Ancestry and is a member of the Grand River Six Nations in Oshweken, Ontario. She has her BFA from the University of British Columbia.

Lee has a strong commitment, enthusiasm and passion for her community, family and friends. She recently won an 'ANGEL AWARD' for the "largest individual creative contribution in the visual arts in the Okanagan Valley." She recently illustrated a children's book which has just been released "I Like Who I Am" which deals with bullying and children learning to accept each other's differences.

"I am a visual storyteller. My work takes me on a spiritual journey that opens a door into the mysteries of creation. I love to play with colour in my work and I believe that color is a great healer. One of my greatest pleasures is having people interpret and find their own meanings within each piece of work. I hope to share a sense of beauty, healing and optimism that I can share with others."

"I have always been committed and very passionate to the incorporation of arts and creativity not only in the health field but the overall community. If we are to have a well-balanced and healthy community we must incorporate an understanding and respect for the importance of the arts."

ArtsCare MembersPam Thompson
I am a professional facilitator and life coach. I recently launched the Creative Healing Centre, a virtual organization where coaching, healing and the arts come together. We specialize in helping people in life transitions to navigate their transitions/cope with change and create more fulfilling, balanced, happy and healthy lives by providing tools, coaching, creative healing plans and educational programs and resources, tailored to their unique needs. We are linked to and supported by an international network of professionals including alternative practitioners, artists and life coaches.

I have a diverse background and experience having worked as a health care provider, university professor and consultant in Canada and internationally in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe.

The interests and involvements I would like to offer to the ArtsCare community as a volunteer are my skills in the following areas: designing and facilitating meetings, workshops and consultation processes; designing programs and projects; and advocating for the arts and health which I strongly believe in and am passionate about. My new business - The Creative Healing Centre - will also be developing and offering free Teleseminars on a variety of topics including "Unleashing your Creativity" and the "Arts and Healing". I would enjoy interviewing some members of the ArtsCare network as part of at least one of these teleseminars, which would profile the participants and the larger group and also spread the message to the public regarding the evidence related to the Arts and Health. When ArtsCare grows, I can envision a link on my website and also perhaps other information about the group and members of the community.

ArtsCareCheryl Hann
RN, HN-BC. I am passionate about people and their wellness. Throughout my 27 year nursing career, my attention has always been drawn to the many patterns and choices in peoples' lives which influence their health and wellbeing. This interest has led me to complete U.S. certifications in holistic nursing (HN-BC), Interactive Guided Imagery(sm), holistic stress management and wellness coaching. I have come to deeply value the mind-body connection and the incredible impact of wellness on one's health. I hold a great appreciation for the uniqueness of each individual's health journey and believe that within each of us is a wealth of rich internal resources.

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create." - Albert Einstein

Creativity, through any of the myriad of expressions, is an essential part of wellness. It has been through working with clients using Interactive Guided Imagery(sm) that I have developed a great respect for the intelligence of the creative mind and its impact on the whole body. If a picture is worth a thousand words, an image, inviting all the senses, is much like being moved by an amazing and powerful film. Through gently guiding clients in accessing their own meaningful inner images, these individuals have found a whole new avenue of support and engagement in their health journey, from wellness and prevention to coping with a specific health issue or treatment to recovery and healing. Imagery plays a role in all areas of creativity, and has led me to further explore many of the other avenues of creative expression and their relationship with health and wellness.

"Passionate living is when we align our head and heart through action" - Maureen Wiedner

For the past 9 years I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with individuals in private nursing practice, supporting them in stress management, self-awareness, and the development of self-help tools. I have also provided the healthcare professional and lay community with related workshops. Currently I am working toward fulfilling a long time passion of creating a wellness center; a caring, integrative environment which supports our greatest potential through wellness.

" Never underestimate the power of a small, dedicated group of people to change the world; indeed, that is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

I believe that as a global community, we are greatly expanding our understanding of health and wellness. I welcome the opportunity to share my knowledge, experience, passion and energy in supporting the arts in healthcare in our community through my upcoming business, ArtsCare and future collaborations.

On thursday afternoons, 3-4 painters attend Peachland Elementary to work with a kindergarten class. They are now completing their second art project with the class. This is part of Aging in Place's Intergenerational program.

As well we are hoping to conduct a Music Therapy program in the future. It is at present in the planning stage.

Colleen C. Linttell
C.C.I.D. Ms. Linttell is a certified contract interior designer, a director with Linttell Projects Inc. and president of Design Thinc, a design firm specializing in health care and senior's housing design and project management.

Colleen has over 25 years experience working with architects, interior designers, equipment planners and healthcare providers to establish functional and facility programs, furnishings and equipment requirements, budgets, interior layouts, finishes, fixturing and colour schemes for over 80 healthcare projects and has been involved in the procurement of approximately $175 million of furnishings, equipment and artwork.

Now in semi-retirement, she is translating her love and understanding of colour, texture, light and composition in a new and unrestrained way as a mixed media artist.

Colleen has instructed in Design Considerations for Long Term Care and Dementia, Barrier -Free Design and Design for Healing Environments throughout Alberta, in Boston, New York, San Francisco and Japan.

"As an interior designer, the role of the arts in health has, for me, been in the creation of healing environments for the patient and healthcare provider. The healing environment must address all of the senses. The visual arts, images of nature, sunlight, views, and colour stimulate visually; music, sounds of nature, peace and quiet and the elimination of undesirable sounds address the auditory; soft, warm textures for the tactile; fresh air, natural fragrance and the elimination of undesirable odour; complemented with appealing foods and beverages all come together to create a healing environment.

In my work, the patient is the recipient of the arts which have a calming, distractive effect; reducing stress, anxiety, fear and frustration and hopefully evoking a smile and pleasant thoughts. Healing environments are evidence-based design with hard data to show their positive effects.

Most of the members of ArtsCare experience the patient as the participant or creator of the arts, but with the same beneficial effects of stress reduction and pleasure. Our health care and arts care expertise and experiences should prove complementary in determining the role of the arts in health."

I do art for this very reason and would love to help out. I can bring these assets to the table. I have my BFA, so I have a vast knowledge of the arts and I'm an office manager at a Financial Firm, so I can offer paper work organization (not my favorite thing to do but I do it well).

Kenna Bridge
For most of us, our vision of paradise is linked to nature. We are hardwired to the earth. It nourishes and delights us. Our parks, gardens and green spaces speak of the making of home and community, and to the health and wellness of all within. Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things. - Cicero

I am a landscape designer, horticultural therapist and student of my garden. Bringing with me a background in education and a lifelong passion for design, I intend to offer my community my vision, creativity and time in the thoughtful creation of gardens, community spaces and programs. In this I hope to facilitate the health and well being of our community, environment and citizens, and contribute to a creative and vigorous economy.

Just cultivate delight. Enjoy the sensory pleasures of the garden. That's number one. - Diane Ackerman

Through my business, Dia Design (www.diadesign.ca) I offer:
  • Garden design, consultation and coaching
  • Enabling gardens: design for lifelong gardening
  • Workshops

Some areas of interest for future exploration and development:
  • School Gardens
  • Community gardens / Urban agriculture
  • Communities in Bloom and other community initiatives
  • Boulevard planting projects and Guerilla gardening
  • Homeless garden projects
  • Children and teen garden projects
  • Seniors garden projects
  • Enabling gardens design for lifelong gardening
  • Design of therapeutic gardens and programs

It is my goal to strive to help people create gardens that reflect their lives and who they are gardens that speak of the making of home and community. If our home is more than the buildings we live in, if home is the outer expression of our inner world, our own little corner of the universe, then the making of a garden is truly a part of the making of home.

We were created to be creators. At its deepest heart, creativity is meant to serve and evoke beauty. - John O'Donohue

The French writer Emile Zola said, "if you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, will answer you: I came here to live out loud." We're all artists; we create a life using time, place and imagination. And although time and place may be outside of our control, the possibilities are endlessŠ

Schooled in Commercial Fine and Graphic Arts, my current portfolio as an artist includes a variety of 2D media. My community involvement background was in Victoria BC. where I worked in art supply sales for 9 years assisting public, schools and students, a photographic retouch business and private commissioned art works. In the 7 years I've been in the Okanagan I have not yet worked in art community and the "Arts for Health" group interests me greatly as I compile "art therapy" material for possible workshop opportunities. I have time to volunteer on a flexible schedule - due to a current medical treatments.

    ArtsCareGail Hodgson
I've been operating my business called BC Muralsplus for 10 years. I create murals, sculpted murals, specialty wall finishes, signage, custom artwork and more. I have a Visual Communications: Graphic Design Diploma from Grant MacEwan College. I transferred my art skills to the walls and taught myself how to do a variety of paint and textured wall finishes. I also do many other creative things on the side.

Here, I must include that I've been on a spiritual truth seeking search for a long time. Consistently, looking for the truth of consciousness and what the reality of self and life is. Although I'm not religious at all, I found that every deep inquiry eventually led to God, Creator, All That Is ... even science! The new quantum sciences, Cymatics (study of sound and vibration), patterns in nature, Emoto's water crystals all seemed to me to point to a Great Designer.

A couple of years ago I wanted to meld my spiritual journey/inquiry with my artwork and created a series of paintings that join spirituality with science. The series is called Innerverse and can be seen on the website link below. A question formed: What might my essence look like? Another aspect of this creative path was my love of dance and movement which again led to the same place of spiritual inquiry and expression, where the question arose: What is the inner experience of my essence? Out of this came some study with Continuum Movement and a variety of multi-cultural styles and dance expression programs. I've also performed creative/contemporary pieces with other dancers as well as solo. On occasion, I've hosted dance/movement workshops and would love to share this way of experiencing with this community.

Somewhere in the midst of all of this discovery process, another question was formed by a few of us creative types: How can we use our creativity to serve in the world? After a series of synchronistic events and connections; The Caia Connection was born. This project helps orphaned children and women at risk in Caia Mozambique. I became the director of a choir/dance/drum and storytelling performance group whose mission was to creatively inform the community of our project. After a five year run with us; The Caia Connection project was recently relocated to Victoria BC.

Recently a desire has unfolded in me to offer a program that supports people (Health Industry) in creating meaningful art as in; a 'healing affirmation' piece, an "artmap" toward healing and health ... or, a letting go ... This could unfold as art on it's own or a combination of movement, art and inner experience. I look forward to many creatively meaningful and fun exchanges.

UBCO Creative Writing student; Society for Learning in Retirement, Director. I am a senior and retired form paid work, presently involved in developing my writing skills at UBCO in Creative Writing classes. I started out writing my life story a few years ago and found it to be a cathartic experience. I have always had an interest in the arts and last year took drawing and painting as well as writing at UBCO. I volunteer at WSSC in the computer lab and serve on the Board of Directors of the Society for Learning in Retirement. I think of myself as a life-long learner as nothing excites me more than learning something new. Perhaps I have something to offer this new initative. I am definitely interested in learning more about it. As a 25 year cancer survivor I have learned a lot about my own health care and believe in the healing properties of pursuing things creative and the health benefits of getting in touch with and developing our creativity.

    Tancha Dirickson
It was in my native country of Brazil that I worked in public healthy and clinical research for companies like Searle of Brasil, Squibb and others for a decade. My background is in Biomedicine (Bachelor in Sciences in Medical Studies) but my love for the arts was always strongly present. After I immigrate to California, I opened a gallery in Carmel in California. The gallery specialized in Brazilian Contemporary Art and Brazilian furniture. In the year 2000 I enrolled myself at Monterey Community College and studied Visual Arts with emphasis in Printmaking. Soon I started to show my work professionally, my artistic resume has already a substantial amount of individual and group exhibitions in the States and here in Canada. Last September I was awarded a grant from the Canada Council for The Arts to travel to Brazil and participate in the #7ARTS at Museo Nacional in Brasilia where I present an academic paper titled: "The Role of The Artist in Contemporary Technological Society". I created last March for the exhibition A Sense of a Place: Penticton 100 years which was curate by the Penticton Art Gallery a site specific installation called "Ascension", I was also a recipient of two consecutive public arts grants from the City of Penticton for being a runner up at the 2006 and 2007 Roundabout Provincial Public Art Competition. In 2004 I was awarded a District of Summerland public art grant for a community based project called "The Gift". My paintings and prints can be seen at Tumbleweed Gallery in Penticton.

My current interests are interdisciplinary investigations (ecology, health, science, philosophy) with visual arts. In particular projects which incorporates multimedia (video, sound, digital, web based) and are also inter-media (site specific installations with a performance art component, art pieces that are product of a community/public interaction).

The ArtsCare initiative seems so appropriate for an artist of my combined background, I also believe, as a former mental patient for a very short time, that art has intrinsic healing qualities. I believe that my current sense of well being and balance is definitely connected to the process of art making. I hope I can develop and create community based projects that are alive, whimsical and relevant to the health and quality of life of all participants and collaborators on the creation of such pieces.

    Artist, Educational Consultant
My professional involvement with art has been primarily an educational one, although I personally keep inspired by creating conceptual fiber art, experimenting with photography, planting gardens, and kayaking/sailing in wild places. Art plays a significant role in my daily health and wellness through life and it's transitions.

    Educational/Experience
Educationally, I have a BA in Art Education (U of T), a diploma in Fiber Arts (Selkirk College), a B Ed. (Brock U.) and recently a Masters in Art Education (U Vic). My research focused on creative process, fibre arts and transition. Professionally, my teaching experiences include the elementary level for 20 years, and adult education at Sheridan and Selkirk Colleges. Presentations include a multimedia talk was called "Forging Links: Making Art about Science on Water" at the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance conference in 2006. I have exhibited at juried local and international shows as a practicing artist. I have facilitated school/ gallery liaisons for student shows including a student/grandparent art show called 'Heart to Heart: Forces Between Generations'.

Since arriving in Lake Country with my family in the fall of 2007 I have been serving on the Public Art Advisory Commission, and completed a contract to photograph Lake Country for the website PictureBC. I look forward to teaching in the UBCO Summer Institute of 2009 and coordinating the Fibre Arts component of Artwalk 2009.

    Philosophy
A climate that fosters creativity can be constructed to enable creative sparks within each learner's nature. Everyone has the potential to be creative. Art is part of all learning (inquiry) and aware living (with intuition). I believe that when we begin to live in an artful and 'noticing' way the quality of our life changes. The essence is tapping into the creative flow of energy where life and art are inseparable. One of the roles of an art educator is to create such a climate to enable this creative empowerment.

My passion is motivated, inquisitive, unstoppable learning in life for all, through art.
Art for learning is Appreciation, Research, Technique
Art for life is Awareness, Response, Thinking (perpetual inquiry)
Art for health is Attunement, Resonance, Trust in Self

    Vision: Art in Health Sector
My vision is the expansion from art for learning toward the promotion of art for life and health, e.g. presentations to health professionals and the design of programs in the health care settings for caregivers and clients/patients. Art making is a creative and engaged process, which can develop self-awareness and connectedness to the planet. This naturally moves the participants toward increased wellbeing and can assist in preventing caregiver burn out. I have spent years creating environments conducive to the creative process and learning. Given models of creative behaviours, inspiration, and a medium through which to express themselves in a risk free environment everyone can be creatively empowered. The medium can range from visual arts, to movement or even creating a garden with plants. Environments have included classrooms, my studio, and places in nature. The healing and educational benefits of the creative process are both deliberate and incidental.
I envision art programs at various health care settings, studio settings, and in gardens or nature. Liaisons can be facilitated with artists in the community or between generations, for instance with seniors and students. For various client groups art shows could be considered collaboratively with art galleries, such as I have coordinated for schools.

Arts & Health North Okanagan Connection, Axis Facilitations, I have been an educator for 30+ years and have found the integrative-experiential method works best with most students for healing learning aches and pains. I am a certified Brain Gym practitioner and noticed the positive results of this ëtoolí. I found many people involved with this process are also very creative people. I have integrated some of my other modalities (tools) into what I call ìBrain ~Axis~î. Hence, the integration of Arts and Health. I am an artist who paints in the various mediums. I needed an artistic method that is simple and non-invasive to get me back into the groove, after leaving my painting for a few years, and found a fantastic easy water-colour method while doing Plein Aire this summer. I felt its healing power. Having taught a simple method of ìMandalasî in my art lessons, I discovered its healing ability, also. I integrate some Brain ~Axis~© motions and activities and find it calms the participants and takes away apprehension acquired through competitive art experiences. This is healing. This is health. Being a Creative Writer who has been published and won a couple awards, I found ìNature Writingî and ìPoetry Slamî fun, expressive, stress reducing and healing. Being involved in these integrative Art and Health methods is preventative health.
