Musicians Perform and Present the Delights of Songmaking
In many parts of the world, singing is an important part of everyday life. In Estonia, a peaceful revolution was aided by the fact that Estonians share a repertoire of three thousand folk songs. In Africa and among the Polynesian Islanders, singing is part of everyday life. Parents sing to their children. Workers use the rhythm of songs as an aid to work.
Conversely, why is it that in our society we have many who don't want to sing and who sing out of tune? Ask a group to sing, and a chorus of "I can't hold a tune" ripples through the crowd as people remember being told, "Just mouth the words". It is amazing that so many adults today have had piano lessons yet cannot accompany simple songs.
On Thursday, April 29th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents The Gift of Music: Discovering the Joys of Song. Join us as musician and teacher Robin Jarman and songwriter Jacquelyn-Rose provide an entertaining, motivational and educational look at the wonderful world of song.
Robin has written a book which teaches how to play the piano by ear, and he will share his knowledge and experience, as well as demonstrate some easy-to-learn musical techniques. Other topics covered during the presentation will include the joy of singing, the decline of singing in the western world, singing in tune, making up songs and functioning at the piano and guitar for accompanying songs, with examples of how teachers, parents and grandparents can foster children's joy of singing.
Robin will be accompanied by songwriter, singer and guitar player Jacquelyn-Rose to demonstrate how a song is put together. Whether you are a pianist, guitar player or a non-musician it will be entertaining and informative. (The audience will not have to sing!)
Robin Jarman received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Geomorphology, and a Bachelor of Education from Adelaide University, South Australia. He moved to BC in 1968, and taught music in elementary and secondary schools for 30 yrs. For 8 years he was Coordinator and consultant in Music and drama for school district #23. In this capacity Robin worked with music and drama teachers from K-12. He is also a conductor clinician, adjudicator, composer and arranger, and the choral director for an international choir and music director for many musicals with Theatre Kelowna. He published a book called You can teach yourself piano by ear and has played keyboard on cruise ships and Fairmont Hotels.
Jacquelyn-Rose is a Canadian Metis singer/songwriter who has been performing professionally for many years throughout the Okanagan. In 2009, she produced and starred in the multimedia musical odyssey SYMBIOSIS The World Today ... the Possibility of Tomorrow. She has also produced 2 cds of her original bluesy folk music, Touched By Love and SYMBIOSIS. With fabulous keyboard numbers and endearing acoustic guitar, her passionate vocals will inspire you. Flowing from tender ballads to punchy blues with a folk flavour, she understands music as a powerful means of communication honoured throughout the world. Jacquelyn's songs express her heartfelt passion for living a meaningful life in joy and freedom. Her lyrics and music will open your heart to a new experience of you.
