Peering Over Greed's Slippery Slope to the Perilous Depths Below

The implosion of the sub-prime mortgage market has virtually sent North America into a tailspin for the last several months. Pundits argue we're now may be on the upswing, but the crisis has called into question our hunger for money. You only have to look at the recent arrest of Montreal investment advisor Earl Jones to know the big money tempts people to act in sometimes unsavory ways.

So what is it that drives us? We all know when the hunger for money tips over the edge, but where is that edge? Is there really something wrong with wanting more? How do we know what the difference is between enjoying nice things, living a good lifestyle, and living a life of greed?

On Thursday, August 20th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents The Power of Greed: Surviving Perilous Times. Join us as we step into these deep waters with John Burton and Doug Hodgkinson to examine how the smell of money can turn honest people into someone no one wants to know.

John Burton"We all need to acquire things in order to survive; food, shelter, clothing and other basics. But when is enough too much," asks John Burton, assistant professor in the Faculty of Management at UBC-Okanagan, who specializes in ethics and corporate responsibility. "Michael Douglas famously claimed in the film "Wall Street" that greed is good. Would he say the same thing today after the implosion of the sub-prime mortgage market?" Prior to arriving in B.C. the former minister with the United Church taught Religion, Morality and Law in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto and alternative dispute resolution at the Queen's University School of Law.

Doug HodgkinsonJoining Burton is Rev. Canon Doug Hodgkinson, a retired minister with the Anglican Church of Canada who last served at the Westbank parish and continues to be a much-sought after speaker. Over the years, he's counseled people about financial issues and examined the issue of finding that balance between having 'the good life' and having too much.
