Unmasking the Necromancers of Words
Exactly who are editors and what do they do? Many people think an editor's main purpose is to spot typos--typographical errors -- as well as dot the i's and cross the t's. Editors are often also stereotyped as people who get really pumped up by learning a new way to use a semi-colon and consider an evening's entertainment as winning at Scrabble.
The above is partially true. But in addition to having sharp eyes and often obsessive-compulsive traits--the nerd part - they often have the ability to bring new life into near-dead writing. This involves a whole set of magician-like skills from reshaping a piece of writing from the inside out to cutting edge polishing techniques to bring out the luster in an author's work.
On Thursday, February 19th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents The Secret Lives of Editors, an in-depth examination of the world of words. Hosting the event is Dona Sturmanis - senior editor of Okanagan Home, Saskatoon Home and Regina Home. Also taking part will be Laura Slauson, who has worked as an online editor with Bridges Transitions since 2001, former newspaper editor and now book editor Ross Freake, and Catherine Jones, managing editor at Bongarde Media - a business to business publisher.
In this eye-opening presentation, these four editors from different disciplines will reveal their secrets from individual processes to tips and techniques for writers. They will also share their personal stories and challenges, from dealing with writers to taking on daunting and difficult tasks. The presenters are:
Dona Sturmanis has 25 years experience in the editing field. During that time she's edited 17 magazines and 30 books. She also teaches editing workshops in continuing education at Okanagan College.
Laura Slauson has worked as an online editor at Bridges Transitions since 2001. Before Bridges, Laura edited a broad range of material, including pulp mill manuals, health insurance contracts and kitchen equipment ads. Although these jobs did not make her rich and famous, they did help her Trivial Pursuit game. She has also seen the other side of the editor's desk as a freelance writer and novelist. Laura has an M.A. from the University of Victoria and a journalism certificate from Vancouver Community College.
Ross Freake has worked at 11 newspapers in five provinces, from St. John's to Kamloops. He was the city editor at three as well as managing editor at three. He has written three books and edited a few more. He is currently a freelance journalist who writes for newspapers and magazines. He also writes a weekly column for The Daily Courier.
Catherine Jones is the Managing Editor at Bongarde Media, a business-to-business publishing company that produces occupational health and safety material for North American companies. Her job involves overseeing the production of a quarterly magazine and acting as Editor-in-Chief of an online community for safety professionals. She's also been a regular contributor to alive magazine and teaches proofreading workshops.
The Secret Lives of Editors is a free event, and takes place at the Bohemian Café. This marks the 78th event the Okanagan Institute has held since the Express series got underway in July 2007. Since that time, the series has played host to many Okanagan luminaries, including former deputy secretary general of Amnesty International Derek Evans, artists Lee Claremont and Gary Pearson, BC Book Award nominee Don Gayton, CBC Literary prize winner poet Harold Rhenisch, distinguished editor and author Jim Taylor, poet and professor John Lent, animator and filmmaker Jim Cliffe, community activist Don Elzer, dancer David LaHay, architect Jim Meiklejohn, culinary artist and writer Heidi Noble, broadcaster Marion Barschel and others from a wide range of creative fields.
