Groundbreaking Learning Through the Arts Program Comes to the Okanagan
The Central Okanagan School District 23 is about to embark on a journey that will bring smiles to students, their families, and to staff. They have discovered the possibilities of arts-infused learning to actively engage students - imagine students learning math through dance, social studies through storytelling, science through visual art.
Learning Through the Arts is a groundbreaking program from The Royal Conservatory of Music that has grown into one of the world's most extensive arts-based school initiatives. It brings specially trained artists into local schools to partner with great teachers. Together they create lessons that make learning core curriculum exciting and relevant in a way that works for all types of learners.
On Thursday, June 4th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents Arts in Learning: Engagement Across Disciples. Join us as John McMahon, school principal and musician discusses exciting new developments in arts-based education in the Okanagan through the Learning Through the Arts program.
At the conclusion of a three-year Queen's University research study, students in the Learning Through the Arts program scored an average of 11 percentile points higher in math than peers in non-LTTA schools. Ongoing high-caliber professional development for teachers, artists, principals and administrators is at the core of the program philosophy.
Teachers and administrators at School District 23 have already began their professional development through interactive workshops - experiencing learning through rich, arts-based lessons. Their dream is to bring these same learning experiences into the classrooms for their students. To fulfill their dream, their immediate goal is to partner trained artists with a few teachers to work together in classrooms at several schools. Longer-term, they will recruit and train local artists to continue this journey and extend arts-rich learning into more classrooms in more schools.
John McMahon is a talented and dedicated teacher, musician, leadership coach as well as the Principal at Glenmore Elementary School. He has taught at schools in the Okanagan and Vancouver, and been very active in school and teacher development. He received a BA in music in 1987 and a MA in education in 1997 from the University of British Columbia. He is a founding member and Vice President of Phi Delta Kappa Okanagan, and a board member of Chamber Music Kelowna.
