Demonstrating the Reason for Rhythm

From the dawn of time, humans have made music and at the heart of that urge beats the drum itself. In the Okanagan, that ceaseless urge for rhythm finds its home in a myriad number of drumming events. Pick any day of the week and you can pretty much drop into some kind of drumming performance whether your love is drum circles, healing rhythms, the jazz beat, or world rhythms - it's all there.

On Thursday, March 12th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents The Beat Goes On: A Celebration of Percussion - a look at the pulse of the growing and diverse drumming culture. This event features percussion experts from a wide range of backgrounds - from world rhythms to jazz, fusion to Japanese. Guests are Jim Copeland, Trevor Salloum, Phillip Reed and Joan Casorso.

While the drum has roots in virtually every culture the world over, each musician's experience with percussion is varied. Jim Copeland will speak about circle drumming - a form of community drumming that emerged in the 1960s as a means of group facilitation.

Trevor Salloum is a talented jazz musician and member of Major Mambo - the Okanagan's premier Latin ensemble. When he's not playing or teaching, he's writing. His books on everything from bongos to Arabic drums have been reviewed in some of the best international drumming magazines including, Modern Drummer Magazine, Percussive Notes, and Latin Beat Magazine.

Phillip Reed is a UBCO student with five years under his belt as a member of the eye-catching and heart-stopping Japanese drumming group Yamabiko Taiko. He'll talk about how he was drawn to this exotic form of drumming, and where he sees it taking him in the future.

Rounding out the event is Joan Casorso who creates a distinctive link between drumming and healing through a rare combination of teaching techniques that even includes yoga. A talented woman in a field often dominated by men, Casorso sees drumming and yoga as a perfect method to balance body, mind and spirit.

THE PERFORMERS

Jim CopemanJim Copeman is a Drum Circles Facilitator for Feel The Rhythm Drum Circles. He brings facilitated drum circles not only to community events such as Canada Day, but also to private functions including retreats, corporate team building exercises and community mental health groups. A retired psychiatric nurse, Jim presently assists with the music program at A Home Away - a retreat for people with addictions. He also facilitates the Community Drum Circle every other Wednesday at the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna.

Trevor SalloumTrevor Salloum is a percussionist, author and teacher who has conducted workshops and performed internationally for over 25 years. Salloum studied music at York University (Toronto) and Escuela Nacional de Arte (Cuba). He has studied with some of the great Cuban masters including Changuito, Enrique Pla, Roberto Vizcaino, Cutumba and Los Munequitos de Matanzas.

Philip ReedPhilip Reed is a third year arts student at UBCO where he is taking cultural studies and languages (French and Japanese). He is also a member of Kelowna's only Japanese drumming group - Yamabiko Taiko, and holds a second degree black belt in Taekwondo. In 2003, he participated in a taiko workshop, and then following year, he joined the newly-formed Yamabiko Taiko after hearing them at Kelowna's "Festival Japan". Over the years Philip has honed his drumming skills and learned to play the bamboo flute. He has played hundreds of performances and now helps lead workshops for other aspiring drummers.

Joan CasorsoJoan Casorso brings over 25 years of teaching experience, along with the development of the Inner Rhythms Teaching Methodology System. Inner Rhythms encompasses drum, dance, rhythm based communication activities, "Yoga Plus", community building and body/mind health. Whether for personal growth, professional development or for sport enhancement, Joan's gentle and informative approach allows participants to relax & open to their own potential.

The Beat Goes On: A Celebration of Percussion takes place at the Bohemian Café. This marks the 81st event the Okanagan Institute has held since the Express series got underway in July 2007. Since that time, the series has played host to many Okanagan luminaries, including former deputy secretary general of Amnesty International Derek Evans, artists Lee Claremont and Gary Pearson, BC Book Award nominee Don Gayton, CBC Literary prize winner poet Harold Rhenisch, distinguished editor and author Jim Taylor, poet and professor John Lent, animator and filmmaker Jim Cliffe, community activist Don Elzer, dancer David LaHay, architect Jim Meiklejohn, culinary artist and writer Heidi Noble, broadcaster Marion Barschel and others from a wide range of creative fields.
