An informal afternoon hour showcasing ideas
and people in the Okanagan creative economy. Join celebrated food writer Jamie Maw, sustainable food expert Rebecca Kneen, and Ruth Mellor from the Healthy Food Council which recently released a food charter for the Central Okanagan, for a lively discussion of food issues.

Food Experts Explore Eating Well on the Creative Frontier
In an era devoted to sustainability, this unique event is an opportunity to hear from three exceptional speakers steeped in knowledge about food, the politics of food, and what it all means.
On Thursday, May 7th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series - this time at the Okanagan College KLO Campus cafeteria - presents Spring Culinaria: Celebrating the Culinary Arts, featuring celebrated food writer Jamie Maw, sustainable food expert Rebecca Kneen, along with Ruth Mellor from the Healthy Food Council which recently released a food charter for the Central Okanagan.
Jamie Maw has been called "one of Canada's foremost authorities on food and restaurants" by Peter C. Newman. A Kelowna resident, Maw is an expert on what we eat, and a vocal champion of sustainable farming, ranching and fishing practices. For 15 years Jamie was the food editor of Vancouver magazine, and a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail and Vancouver Sun newspapers, and Western Living, Bon Appetit and EnRoute magazines, amongst many others. In March he was inducted in the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame. He has also been awarded the Jack Webster Award for Excellence in Journalism, has won the National Magazine Award and the Western Magazine Award on numerous occasions.
Rebecca Kneen spent 15 years sheep farming in Nova Scotia before moving to the West Coast where she quickly established herself in food/agriculture education and advocacy in Vancouver through the FarmFolk/CityFolk Society. Her family has been actively involved in the politics of food and sustainability since the 1960s. Her parents Brewster and Cathleen Kneen are the publishers of The Ram's Horn - a monthly journal of food systems analysis). She and her partner Brian MacIsaac own and operate Crannóg Ales in Sorrento - Canada's first certified organic microbrewery and only current commercial hopyard. Brian and Rebecca are currently involved in First Nations food sovereignty issues, the Certified Organic Associations of BC, and Feast of Fields Okanagan.
Ruth Mellor has played an integral role with the Healthy Food Council which recently culiminated in the development of a Food Charter for the Central Okanagan. Raised in Ontario, she has a Masters in Human Nutrition from UBC and worked as a diet tech at Kelowna General Hospital.

Spring Culinaria: Celebrating the Culinary Arts takes place at the Okanagan College cafeteria. This marks the 89th event the Okanagan Institute has held since the Express series got underway in July 2007. Express has played host to many Okanagan luminaries, including former deputy secretary general of Amnesty International Derek Evans, artists Lee Claremont and Gary Pearson, BC Book Award nominee Don Gayton, CBC Literary prize winner poet Harold Rhenisch, distinguished editor and author Jim Taylor, poet and professor John Lent, animator and filmmaker Jim Cliffe, community activist Don Elzer, dancer David LaHay, architect Jim Meiklejohn, culinary artist and writer Heidi Noble, broadcaster Marion Barschel and others from a wide range of creative fields.
