Spring Culinaria Gives Food a Refreshing Voice
Whether it's bounty from the earth, or the buzz in the air that we breathe, the Okanagan is alive and rich with unique flavours and a growing number of artisanal treats and experiences. Such is the nature of what people can expect to hear from the refreshingly vocal speakers taking part in Refreshing the Palate, this season's Culinaria.
As its "first course", Culinaria serves up a collection of vibrant and insightful speakers - each one passionate about their craft - from writing about what the Okanagan offers today, to providing a singular food experience destined to evoke memories for days if not years to come.
On Thursday, May 13th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series - this time at the Okanagan College Theatre, 1000 KLO Road, Kelowna - presents Spring Culinaria: Refreshing the Palate. Join us as writer and radio producer Karin Wilson, extraordinary grower Milan Djordjevich, honey mead producer Judie Barta and celebrated culinary writer Jamie Maw give food a resounding voice.
Following the talks, guests are invited on a virtual taste tour of the valley with carefully crafted food and beverages featuring products from the valley's five micro-regions - Similkameen, South Okanagan, Naramata Bench, Central Okanagan and North Okanagan. Sears are available at a cost of $60 each.
Jamie Maw was the Food + Travel Editor of Vancouver magazine for 14 years, and a frequent contributor to The Globe and Mail, Western Living, Bon Appétit, CKNW, the CBC and Shaw TV, and many places elsewhere in print and other media. He was recently a judge on FOX-TV's Hell's Kitchen with Gordon Ramsay. He has won National Magazine and Western Magazine awards on numerous occasions. Jamie was inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame last year, and in 2008, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Culinary Arts by Vancouver magazine. He was the founding editor of The Eating + Drinking Guide to British Columbia and the co-founder of The Chefs' Table Society of BC, and is co-editor of the bestselling cookbooks, Vancouver Cooks and Vancouver Cooks 2. Jamie divides his time between his homes in Vancouver and Kelowna, where he contributes his weekly culinary news magazine 'Eat My Words' on AM 1150. He launched Go Go Magazine, an Okanagan lifestyle magazine, in April, 2010.
Judie Barta is a pioneering entrepreneur with 18 years of experience in business development specializing in the wellness and wine industries. Over the last two decades, Judith has built and sold several service businesses although her love of food, wine and her dream of purchasing land in the Okanagan Valley to establish an estate winery has never been too far from her heart. It was with this in mind that she has launched Meadow Vista Honey Wines - a premier certified organic honey winery producing Canada's first organic sparkling honey wine! The perfect fit for Judie, who's love for organic food, wine, supporting local farming and passion for honey bees is apparent to everyone she meets.
Milan Djordjevich admits he's a bit like a prodigal son who returned to the family farm that has been Stoney Paradise. Faced with the inability to market the family table grapes after decades of pre-VQA winery feudalism, Milan returned to help the family market its grape crop. The response at the farmers market provided the strength to continue. A nervous venture to Granville Island with a few tomatoes thrown into the mix, along with attitude laced cardboard signage and the stage was set for the next 15 years. Now back in Kelowna, Milan will share some of his episodic memories. Don't expect to learn much about farming, or business or customer relations, but maybe there are insights to be gained into how we can make our relationship to food more meaningful.
When Karin Wilson first arrived in the Okanagan Valley, the artisanal food industry was in its infancy. As a reporter for the Penticton Herald, she was there when the city launched its farmer's market - now an institution in the valley. Karin is a writer/broadcaster with more than 20 years experience in journalism and a well-developed taste for both the unusual and the refined. A seeker of food for the senses, Karin's stories have covered the gamut from the granting of the first J license in B.C., to the controversial removal of Six Mile Ranch from the Agricultural Land Reserve. Her work on both food and agriculture have appeared in Okanagan Arts, BC's venerable Orchard and Vine, and on CBC Radio. Karin is the associate director of the Okanagan Institute where she distinguished herself by hosting the popular weekly Express series, and establishing Culinaria in 2007. An award-winning journalist, she currently works for CBC Radio's Daybreak where she's been known to arrive with homemade marzipan in hand.
This marks the third Culinaria event, and the 138th Express event the Okanagan Institute has held since the Express series got underway in July 2007. Culinaria is presented in association with the faculty and students of Okanagan College's Culinary Arts program. Proceeds will support the writing and publishing programs of Okanagan College, including Ryga: A Journal of Provocations.
