Expert Explains Sustainable Transportation Theory and Practice
What moves us in the Okanagan? Transportation. It's that system of roads, rail, waterways and airways that forms an ever-expanding matrix over our region, conveying people and goods into, out of, and throughout the valley. Like the circulatory system of the body it mimics, our transportation system carries the lifeblood of our communities. We need it to be effective, efficient and unhindered. And we need it to be healthy.
Unless properly managed, our transportation system can threaten the very sustainability of the communities it serves. Our increasing population puts increased demands on transportation, and without judicious planning energy costs, pollution and hazards to health and safety will also increase. Our Okanagan agricultural and tourism industries depend on the pristine beauty of the valley. Do we risk losing this natural attribute to expanding carpets of asphalt and smog cover? Over 400 people die in road crashes in BC each year. Are these 400 deaths an acceptable risk trade-off for the benefit of road travel?
On Thursday, May 20th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café, Kelowna - presents What Moves Us? Rethinking Transportation. Join us as UBCO professor and transportation engineer Gordon Lovegrove shows how creative thinking is the first step in forging a future of sustainable communities.
Dr. Gordon Lovegrove has more than twenty years' experience as a transportation engineer and consultant on projects that emphasize the sustainability of lifestyles and communities. Some of Dr. Lovegrove's projects include UBC Vancouver's award winning Universal Transportation Pass (U-Pass) program that is saving 40,000 university students over $4 million per month and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 15,000 tonnes per year; UBC Vancouver's TREK Program Centre dedicated to promoting sustainable transportation and development on campus; The City of Vancouver's city-wide bicycle path, the Seaside Bicycle Route, connecting Stanley Park to UBC, and the Township of Langley's award winning Shared-Use (equestrian, bicycle, pedestrian) Trails program to reduce auto reliance. Dr. Lovegrove's current research includes quantifying the benefits of increased bicycling in our communities. He is also involved in the establishment of Canada's first research lab on Sustainable Road Safety at UBC Okanagan.
Dr. Lovegrove's presentation will include examples of sustainability performance measures from communities throughout the world, and discussion of how lessons from these examples might be applied to the Okanagan Valley. Creative thinking is the first step in forging a future of sustainable communities. Come prepared to be challenged, to challenge - and to leave smaller footprints.
