EXPRESS SPEAKERS OPEN UP ABOUT THEIR PATH TO PILGRIMAGE
It was Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu who once said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. And so it is, that for many spiritual people, the physical journey of a pilgrimage is yet another way of making that commitment to take the journey within.
Next year, more than 100,000 people from around the world are expected to descend on one place - the famed Cathedral de Santiago in Spain - to mark the end of their pilgrimage by walking through the ancient pathways to the place where the bones of St James the Apostle are reputed to be buried. In modern day parlance, this journey has become known simply as The Camino.
While the Camino typically attracts Christians, the practice of pilgrimage is common to many faiths. Buddhists have four sites for pilgrimage, and the Holy Land is a focal point for pilgrimages of the Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Bahai. Even people with no religious affiliation are now adding pilgrimage to their spiritual practice.
On Thursday, November 12th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents The Journey's the Thing: A Pilgrim's Path. Join us for an insightful exploration of "walking spirituality" featuring Jonathan Greenhalgh and Wayne Emde, who have plumbed the depths of the pilgrim's journey in both Japan and Europe.
The event features images collected by the travellers, along with a frank discussion about their personal insights into an experience that many describe as both profound and transformative.
Jonathan (Jack) Greenhalgh (right) is an ordained Anglican priest who served 18 years as first dean of the St. Michael and All Angels Church. Prior to that he served in parishes in both Vernon and Revelstoke. Following retirement, he followed his passion for photography and travel, and completed the 800-km trek to the Camino this past May.
Wayne Emde (left) took up pilgrimage after spending more than three decades teaching English, journalism and photographer in Cranbrook and Vernon. Last year he walked the 1200 kilometer Buddhist pilgrimage around the island of Shikoku in Japan with his oldest son Jason. This spring he joined Jack Greenhalgh on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
