Experts Explore the CleanTech Opportunity

Housing starts may be down in the Okanagan, but that doesn't mean the drive towards sustainability has slowed down as well. In fact, the push to transform the region into a heartland of sustainability has just heated up now that three critical organizations are now coming together to discuss how to transform ideas into reality.

On Thursday, November 13th, the Okanagan Institute Express series hosts an important collaborative interchange focused on CleanTech: Reinventing Construction featuring Brad Clements of the Okanagan Partnership, David Mayes of the Okanagan Environmental Industry Alliance and Douglas MacLeod of the Okanagan Science and Technology Council. The session takes place at the Bohemian Café from 5 to 6:30 pm.

The aim is to create a regional cluster of stakeholders - from those involved in green buildings and sustainable communities, to those working in sustainable design and the technologies associated with each of these areas. The hope is that working together will result in more influence and success with funding agencies, government departments and elected officials.

This session will be of particular interest to engineers, planners, designers, contractors, developers, politicians, entrepreneurs, financiers, technologists, researchers and manufacturers who want to create an interdisciplinary cluster that can work together to create pilot projects and prototypes, secure funding for research and commercialization and develop new approaches to design and construction through clean technologies.

Okanagan InstituteDavid Mayes is the chairperson of Okanagan Environmental Industry Alliance. Owner and president of Complete Home Energy Ltd., an Okanagan-based firm providing energy efficiency home improvements, Mayes was previously engaged by New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, a government agency. In numerous visits to New Zealand, Mr. Mayes had a unique opportunity to observe the Kiwis' national commitment to a "clean and green" economy and lifestyle, and the economic benefits they derive from their commitment to the environment. Mr. Mayes has held senior positions with Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems, and holds a B.A. from San Jose State University, with graduate study at Oxford University and the University of Wales.

Okanagan InstituteBrad Clements is the executive director of the Okanagan Partnership. As a consultant and facilitator with Performance Decisions he has over 10 years experience assisting Canadian and International businesses and organizations with strategic planning and execution. This past summer, the Okanagan Partnership released its report on sustainable housing, which called for the protection of the current inventory of lower-priced houses and rental units, an increase in density and an effort to reduce construction costs of each housing unit.

Okanagan InstituteDouglas MacLeod is the executive director of the Okanagan Science and Technology Council. Prior to that, he was the executive director of the Canadian Design Research Network - a pan-Canadian network of architecture and design schools. A registered architect himself, he's a contributing editor to the Canadian Architect Magazine and has led innovative research projects across Canada, most recently the Canada-British Columbia Green Building Mission to Seoul and Beijing.

CleanTech: Reinventing Construction is a free event, and takes place at the Bohemian Café. This marks the 66th event the Okanagan Institute has held since the Express series got underway in July 2007. Since that time, the series has played host to many Okanagan luminaries, including former deputy secretary general of Amnesty International Derek Evans, artists Lee Claremont and Gary Pearson, BC Book Award nominee Don Gayton, CBC Literary prize winner poet Harold Rhenisch, distinguished editor and author Jim Taylor, poet and professor John Lent, animator and filmmaker Jim Cliffe, architect Jim Meiklejohn, broadcaster Marion Barschel and others from a wide range of creative fields.
