Institute to Hold Public Forum on Community Engagement

It takes many heads to put a weekly program together, especially one that address the broad scope of the Okanagan Institute's Express series of public presentations. The Institute is now inviting the audience to join in, and help determine the future course of this bold experiment in public dialogue and creative engagement.

The popular weekly series was first launched in July 2007 and since then has hosted nearly 120 events, featuring more than 300 experts and enthusiasts exploring the creative, social, intellectual, and economic issues of our time, and how they influence our lives in our communities.

On Thursday, November 19th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents Express Yourself: A Community Forum. Join us for a freewheeling brainstorming session on the shape and future of the creative, social, intellectual, and economic issues of our time, and how Express should evolve to address them.

The result has been eclectic potpourris of events that have examined among other things, the future of peace, rural versus urban lifestyles, aspects of environmental technology, and a full-gamut of the creative arts, culture and creative industries. It's also played host to numerous book launches, arts and crafts showcases, design and technical sessions, and performances by drummers, jazz musicians, poets and others.

"Back when we started we really didn't know if there would be an appetite for such events," said Robert MacDonald, director of the Okanagan Institute. "Now what we want to do is dig deeper into the knowledge people have of the Okanagan. We want to know what excites them, who they'd like to hear from, and what we can do to help create a more vibrant and connected creative community."

"One of the things I really love about Express is how it has managed to forge links between seemingly diverse yet like-minded people who might otherwise never met," said Karin Wilson, associate director and regular host of the series. "I firmly believe that it is through conversation between such groups that people form new ideas of what they want to see in the Okanagan, and how they can take an active role in creating the future. We're hoping people will take this opportunity to check in again, make those connections, and help grow Express."
