Artists Showcase Their Gifts for All Reasons
Every teacher will tell you - everyone has the ability to create something, but few devote sufficient time to elevate their personal creations into some form of art. So often, once we learn the basic skills, we back away from the necessary experience of risk that elevates the usual to the unusual.
On Thursday, November 20 at 5 pm, the Okanagan Institute Express series hosts The Gift of Art: A Showcase of Unique Objects at the Bohemian Café featuring seven outstanding artists who not only have the "gift", but can help us in our quest for objects that are telling, beautiful and unique.
During the event the Bohemian transforms into an intimate gallery for viewing pieces, each one exquisitely crafted by the artists themselves. As part of the event, the artists will talk about their work - what drew them to it, how they got started, and the unique gifts that showed up in their artistic lives along the way.
This event provides a perfect opportunity to get to know Okanagan artists in an intimate setting, and spark the imagination for the gift-giving season to come.
TARI DODD-DIBELLO is primarily known for her shimmering paintings that evoke Monet and sometimes Chagall. Recently she's added a new dimension to her artistry - creating whimsical creatures she calls "sprites". Each one is designed to delight both the imagination and the heart. >>
<< JANICE FINGADO works with silver and semi-precious stones. Influenced by her travels around the world, her jewelry designs are owned by enthusiastic collectors in Germany, Venezuela, Switzerland, England and the States, as well as a devoted following of Okanagan fans. He work was recently featured in Okanagan Arts magazine.
LAURA GOLDSTEIN creates unique jewelry collections featuring signature petal pearl florets, leaves and buds. She combines these elements with freshwater pearls, gemstones and even antique architectural finds to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Her work has appeared in Elle Canada/U.S., LouLou, Fashion, Chatelaine, InStyle and Wedding Bells U.S. She recently moved to Kelowna from her hometown of Toronto. www.mashumashu.com >>
<< SHELAH PANSEGRAU is a contemporary glass bead artist and jewelry designer. Her intricate and distinctive Bella Dolci glass beads are individually wound in an intense flame, from molten strands of Italian and German glass, precious metals, enamels and frits. Shelah's art beads are permanent and immutable and become the most intimate of art objects - glass talismans worn next to the skin.
MOHINI SINGH is a professional broadcaster and journalist. Being an artist came by accident. Mohini wanted to try her hand at pottery and slowly she started adding her own ideas and cultural perspective to the clay. The result is artwork that focuses on Kama sutra images. Her work speaks of both love and joy loving yourself and our partner. Through her art she hopes to build bridges between all Canadians. >>
<< NORBERT SPYTH is a retired engineer who launched himself into the artist's world following a lifelong interest in medieval architecture, early mosaics, metal arts, stained glass art and design. In 1997, he started to design stained glass pieces and later mosaics. Since 2006 he has participated in the Lake Country ArtWalk.
ANNABEL STANLEY is a trained horticulturalist who has worked as a florist in London serving prestigious clientele such as Harrods, Estee Lauder and Tiffany's, even decorating the Christmas tree for the Duke and Duchess of York at Buckingham Palace. In 2003, she moved to Westbank where she now grows grapes and incorporates the vines into beautiful decorative structures of all sizes. >>
The Gift of Art: A Showcase of Unique Objects is a free event, and takes place at the Bohemian Café. This marks the 67th event the Okanagan Institute has held since the Express series got underway in July 2007. Since that time, the series has played host to many Okanagan luminaries, including former deputy secretary general of Amnesty International Derek Evans, artists Lee Claremont and Gary Pearson, BC Book Award nominee Don Gayton, CBC Literary prize winner poet Harold Rhenisch, distinguished editor and author Jim Taylor, poet and professor John Lent, animator and filmmaker Jim Cliffe, architect Jim Meiklejohn, broadcaster Marion Barschel and others from a wide range of creative fields.
