Mouth-Watering Writing Tips Revealed by Insiders

Millions of foodie mouths gaped wide-open last month when they read the news that the last page had turned on the venerable 68-year-old Gourmet magazine. Many critics argue that the Conde Naste publication fell victim to the burgeoning TV food culture that arguably started decades ago with the Galloping Gourmet in Canada and Julia Child in the US. But others believe the magazine simply lost touch with its core readers - those people who do more than simply eat with their eyes. They cook, they experience, and above all, read articles that ignite all five of their senses.

With the advent of the heightened awareness of the culinary world through such things as the slow food movement, the 100-Mile Diet and agricultural sustainability, food writing has never been more exciting, and it's a growing field right here in the Okanagan.

On Thursday, November 19th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents Culinary Writing: The Scribes Describe. Join us as we welcome three food journalism experts - writers Judy Steeves, Bryden Winsby and Joyce Wegner - to our eclectic bohemian table to stimulate our imaginations.

This 90-minute session offers expert insight that will tantalize both budding and seasoned food writers. Learn what it takes to examine food from the ground-up for the BC Fruit Growers Magazine, and find out what's behind the birth of the region's first foodie magazine - Savour. Plus a look at recipe development and food column writing through the eyes of Capital News reporter Judie Steeves, author of Jude's Kitchen.

Judie SteevesJudie Steeves wrote her first food column March 1, 1998 with a friend, as part of a re-design of the Capital News. Within three years, she was writing the column solo. Cooking since she was a child, combined with 40-years of writing, it wasn't hard to keep the column going. Judie also writes a monthly column for Country Life in B.C., and is well-known throughout the region as an expert journalist on the agriculture industry.

Bryden WinsbyBryden Winsby is the publisher and editor of BC Fruit Grower Magazine, which he founded in 2003. It serves the province's tree fruit and wine industries, with a circulation of about 2,300. Bryden, who is also a city councillor in West Kelowna, has spent most of his working life in the newspaper and magazine business as a reporter, editor and publisher. He's won writing awards from both the Canadian Community Newspapers Association and the BC and Yukon Community Newspapers Association. His company, OMedia Communications will be launching several other trade magazines for the agriculture sector, beginning in February.

Joyce WegnerJoyce Wegner is the managing editor of Savour Magazine - the new Okanagan magazine that celebrates local gourmet style. Joyce is an accredited member of Travel Media Association of Canada who has written about the Okanagan nationally and internationally for more than a decade. A long-term resident of the valley, Joyce is the former Member Relations Coordinator of Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association. She has witnessed the growth of the tourism industry especially within the food and wine culture. Most recently, she was a regular feature writer for Western Canadian Resorts Magazine and has written for numerous inflight magazines for WestJet, Pacific Coastal Airlines, and Cathay-Pacific.
