Local Authors Invite Us to Explore the Natural Environment

Take a hike, folks! No, we're not trying to be rude, only encouraging. Living as we all do in one of Canada's, not to the say the world's, great natural locations, this timely event focuses on recent writing about easily accessed local attractions. The routine duties of daily life, subtle pressures of our automobile-borne fast life, and the semi-amnesia of familiarity all conspire to deaden our awareness of the local environment.

Nothing helps better than a few enthusiastic wake-up notices to pull us out of that daily errands frame of mind and open our eyes to the variety of alternatives surrounding us. Of course, in the Okanagan we are spoiled for choice with lakes, trails, wilderness areas, heritage buildings, and pioneer settlements primed to pull us away from the mall life.

On Thursday, September 10th at 5 pm the ongoing weekly Okanagan Institute Express series at the Bohemian Café presents Take A Hike: Nature As Narrative . Join us as writers Wayne Wilson and Deborah Greaves take us on a delightful journey through the wild and wonderful geographical and natural environment of the Okanagan valley.

The two well-respected local writers show the way off the speedway and toward personal Waldens which provide solitude, opportunity for healthy exercise, and time for personal reflection. They welcome you to come take a hike - even if only from the comfort of a Bohemian Café seat.

Wayne WilsonWayne Wilson is Executive Director of the Kelowna Museums Society. Since 1978 he has served variously as the Kelowna Museum's Exhibitions Co-ordinator, Museum Educator, and Assistant Director. In addition, Wayne has consulted to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canada Lands Corporation and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George. He co-chaired two BC Museums Association conferences, delivered papers at provincial and international museums conferences, and currently serves on Kelowna's Community Heritage Commission. He is a published fiction writer, author of heritage-related articles and books, and has co-produced two award-winning television documentaries. Wayne holds a Master's Degree in Historical Geography from UBC and has taught courses on BC historical geography and the regional geography of Canada for Okanagan University College.

Wayne believes that the human landscape is a kind of language that speaks of the generations which overlay one another and give us the context we need to make sense of the places we live in and drive through each day. The community landscape we have inherited and will pass on is the result of deliberate actions - actions influenced by technology and by the values, attitudes and perceptions of those who went before us. Wayne's talk will explore some of these shared landscapes with a look through a recent local publication, The History of the KLO Benches: their tragedies and comedies.

Her newest book in the series is The Guide to the Wild Side of your Neighbourhood in the Okanagan Valley, complete with sections on snowshoeing and paddling. Not an extreme athlete but a dedicated tail walker, nature observer and photographer, Deborah will discuss her journey in bringing the Guide to the Wild Side books, which are written, designed, printed and bound in the Okanagan, to the local public. Join us and learn from our expert speakers on ways to break out of the ordinary and make personal use of the great resources available to us as residents of this beautiful location.
