Imagine Summer Explores Our Artistic Connection with Nature
No matter where we turn, we just can't get away from nature. It inspires our art, informs our science, and plays with our imagination.
This week the Imagine Summer series continues Thursday, August 16 4:30pm at Mosaic Books with an examination of our experience with nature. Birds and Branches - Flights of the Imagination features UBCO professor and poetess Nancy Holmes, local author and journalist Dona Sturmanis, and Yuri Akuney, an expert in photo restoration.
Nancy Holmes, with four collections of poetry under her belt, has become a well-known figure in Kelowna literary circles for her willingness to commit random acts of poetry at unusual locations from bus stops to police stations. It reflects her belief that poetry isn't something rarefied - but a means of natural expression. She's currently working on an anthology of nature poems along with poet Don McKay.
Dona Sturmanis has written thousands of literary and journalist articles over the last 34-years, starting out in Vancouver before settling in the Okanagan Valley. During that time she's received more than a dozen awards and mentored writers along the way.
"I love writing about things that people don't know a lot about," she said, recalling an article she did for Step Magazine that examined the lives of masters in typography.
Yuri Akuney was born in the Ukraine in 1961 and trained as an electronics engineer eventually working as a microcomputer designer. All the while he was fascinated with digital imagery and photo restoration. Upon immigrating to Canada in 2001, he seized the opportunity to start his own business.
"Sometimes a small faded photo is the only material reminder of people or events long gone but still important to us," he said.
Imagine Summer events are put on in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q, and sponsored by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Wood Lake Books, CKOV Radio, UBCO's Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and in support of Project Literacy Kelowna.
This is a free event put on by the Okanagan Institute which works to enhance the quality of cultural life in the Okanagan through publications and events. For more information about the series, pick up a flyer at Mosaic Books. Seating is limited, so reserve your spot here.
The series continues through August with The Gift of Story on August 23 featuring storytellers Harry van Bommel and Cathryn Wellner with Metis artist Dennis Weber, and Viva Vernacular on August 30 - an examination of Okanagan architecture.
