Imagine Summer
Discoveries Never Cease at Imagine Summer

Children instinctively know that summer is the time of discovery. It's when we slow down life long enough to check under every rock, real or imagined. Imagine Summer picks up the theme of Discoveries with its latest free cultural event Thursday, August 2 featuring readings from local writers Jarrod Thalheimer and Don Gaton, art teacher Dawn Emerson and the photography of Laura Tucker.

Don Gayton has spent nearly 20 years writing about the natural environment in the Okanagan. His work has appeared in Canadian Geographic magazine, Equinox, and Western Living. An author of three books, he's also the past-recipient of the Canadian Science Writers Journalism Award and the U.S. National Outdoor Book Award. His latest book, Interwoven Wild: An Ecologist Loose in the Garden, is being published by Thistledown Press.

Jarrod Thalheimer is a Kelowna freelance writer and winner in The Province Newspapers' Sunday Serial Thriller fiction competition. He currently writes the AdFool column on Castanet.

Dawn Emerson teaches art to students throughout the Okanagan and is a director of Cool Arts. Her biggest discovery came to her while teaching students with disability. "I had a student who was blind and 'saw' art through touch. He would create the most extraordinary sculptures out of clay. His texture was so elaborate and intricate, he taught me to see with all my senses."

Laura Tucker tells stories through the eye of the camera. She's travelled all across Canada, and discovers graceful captivating images in the shadows and corners of the world.

The series is part of the ongoing Imagine Summer events put on in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q. The event is sponsored by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Wood Lake Books, CKOV Radio, UBCO's Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and supports the work of Project Literacy Kelowna.

Discoveries takes place 4:30 pm at Mosaic Books, 411 Bernard Avenue in Kelowna. This is a free event put on by the Okanagan Institute which works to enhance the quality of cultural life in the Okanagan through publications and events. For more information about the series, pick up a flyer at Mosaic Books. Seating is limited, so reserve your spot at HERE.

The Imagine Summer series continues through August with The Joys of Jewelry on August 9, and Birds and Branches August 16, and others in the works.
