Imagine Summer
Storytellers open the book on their gift

It's part of the human condition that as we grow and learn we tell each other stories. For a few of us, that piece takes on an art form and through this our cultural storytellers are born.

This Thursday, August 23, the Okanagan Institute opens the book on storytelling with The Gift of Story - featuring the talents of two very different storytellers -Cathryn Wellner and Harry van Bommel, along with the visual storytelling of Metis artist Dennis Joseph Weber.

Cathryn Wellner began telling stories as a survival tool. After eight years working as a librarian in secondary schools, she decided to move to an elementary school where her storytelling skills flourished. It wasn't long before she found herself on the road travelling throughout Canada, the U.S., and Europe as a professional storyteller. Love landed her in Canada permanently, and she now works as a food and health leader for Interior HealthŠ but that's another story.

Harry van Bommel comes to storytelling from a decidedly different place that of a hospice caregiver with a passion for memories. Von Bommel is the author of 30 books, including Family Hospice Care and Recording Your Life Story or Family History. His books have been distributed to more than one million patients, families and professional and volunteer care providers across the country. A passionate speaker, van Bommel cared for both his parents and his grandfather until they died.

Dennis Joseph Weber takes his inspiration from his Metis culture, with a particular focus on portraiture. The storytelling aspect comes from his ability to weave in history. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1951, Weber lived most of his life in Calgary before moving to the Okanagan Valley. He is an associate member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a Senior Member of the Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists. His work is being featured in We Are Metis, an exhibit on display at the Kelowna Heritage Museum until December 6.

Imagine Summer events are presented in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q - and sponsored by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Wood Lake Books, CKOV Radio, UBCO's Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and in support of Project Literacy Kelowna.

This is a free event put on by the Okanagan Institute which works to enhance the quality of cultural life in the Okanagan through publications and events. For more information about the series, pick up a flyer at Mosaic Books. Seating is limited, so reserve your spot here.

The Imagine Summer series continues throughout August with weekly events including Viva Vernacular August 30 featuring architect Nick Bevanda, design critic Sandra Kochan, and September 6 with The View from Naramata featuring artist Frances Hatfield and writer Melody Hessing. Imagine Summer morphs into Imagine Autumn on September 21, as the weekly series of presentations, workshops and seminars continues to present the works and ideas of leading Okanagan creative individuals.
