Okanagan perched on architectural precipice
Buildings start life as nothing more than a reflection of necessity. But with time and prosperity comes the desire to create structures that not only serve a use, but hold promise for a community's future. One hundred years into its history and the Okanagan is now well-placed to build structures that make statements about who we are and what we value.
This Thursday, August 30 Okanagan Institute continues its Imagine Summer series underway at Mosaic Books with an investigation into architecture and design. Viva Vernacular - Architecture & Imagination features architect Nick Bevanda, cultural design expert Sandra Kochan, and writer-editor Ross Freake.
Nick Bevanda's passion for architecture revealed itself early in life through his drawing and painting. His father was a contractor, so it didn't take long for Bevanda to figure out he was destined for the profession. He obtained his training at Washington State University, and in 2003 opened up his own practice in his hometown of Penticton.
Sandra Kochan is the coordinator of cultural planning for the City of Kelowna. She developed an interest in design through a much more indirect route, pursing various careers including law, wine, food, tourism, writing and art. Infused with an insatiable curiosity, Kochan continually questions how things work, and why we design things the way we do.
Ross Freake has spent decades immersed in building of a completely different character that of stories. Like the architect, writing is a bit of science - think grammar - with a hefty dose of art thrown in for good measure. It requires a delicate balance of both for a good story to stand up.
Viva Vernacular is a free event, and takes place at 4:30 pm. It's put on in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q. Imagine Summer is sponsored by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Wood Lake Books, CKOV Radio, UBCO Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and supports the work of Project Literacy Kelowna.
Imagine Summer continues September 6 with The View from Naramata featuring artist Frances Hatfield and writer Melody Hessing. Imagine Summer morphs into Imagine Autumn on September 21, as the weekly series of presentations, workshops and seminars continues to present the works and ideas of leading Okanagan creative individuals.
