Okanagan Artists Showcase Their Passion for All Things That Glitter
It's a universal truth that people the world over adorn themselves. From beads to stones, and silver to gold - the desire to add artistic flair to our body seems to be part of the human condition. In the Western world jewelry is seen not only as a symbol of wealth - just think of England's Crown jewels - but also as a means to enhance beauty, even if only for a brief time.
The Okanagan Institute takes a close look at our passion for jewelry with The Joys of Jewerly, featuring the innovative and intricate works of three local jewellers - Janice Fingado, Sheila Pansegrau and Deborah Wilson.
Janice Fingado first started jewelry-making in Zurich in 1967 working with silver and semi-precious stones. Her designs are now owned by enthusiastic collectors in Germany, Venezuela, Switzerland, England and the States, as well as a devoted following of Kelowna fans. She now operates JF Designs at the Rotary Centre for the Arts where she enthusiastically shares her passion by teaching a new generation of young artists.
"I love taking a beautiful stone and setting it in such a way that it become a piece of art," she says.
Sheila Pansegrau is a contemporary glass bead artist and jewelry designer. The former university college instructor now creates Bella Dolci glass beads - each one individually crafted from molten strands of Italian and German glass, combined with precious metals and enamels.
"Beadmaking transports me to another place where there is only fire and glass -- it is pure alchemy," she says.
Deborah Wilson works as a sculptor most of the time. In 1987, National Geographic named her one of the best contemporary sculptors today. But every so often, she needs to shift her attention away from the large scale and when that happens, she transforms her creations into jewelry taking her inspiration from all over the world.
"Lately I have been interested in Indonesian designs that have evolved in their culture, for adornments, be it jewellery or otherwise.
The Joys of Jewelry is part of the ongoing Imagine Summer events put on in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q. The event is sponsored by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Wood Lake Books, CKOV Radio, UBCO's Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and supports the work of Project Literacy Kelowna.
