» Stan Sauerwein is a veteran journalist and the author of 16 books, primarily historical biographies. He specializes in reminding us about remarkable people we may have forgotten.
» Karin Wilson is an award-winning journalist whose work appears in print and on CBC radio. She believes in following up rumours to see if they are true or not.
» Sterling Haynes's short stories and poems are widely published. His writings remind us of colourful characters from the past and their sometimes quirky escapades.
» Jarrod Thalheimer is a Kelowna writer. His writing explores the territory between reality and myth, and he's not adverse to spreading a few rumours.
» Dona Sturmanis is a prize-winning author, journalist and magazine editor. Investigating rumour and speculation are common themes in her articles, poetry and fiction.
» Gary Nylander is an award-winning photographer whose work appears in print and galleries. His lens reminds us of delicacy and design of the natural world.

Imagine Summer
HOT SUMMER SERIES TURNS CULTURAL HEADS

This summer Kelowna has culture on the brain with the launch of a torrid series of presentations, workshops and seminars at Mosaic Books, produced by the Okanagan Institute.

"Imagine Summer is for people who are looking for the wild blue yonder," said Robert MacDonald, who is coordinating the free series in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q.

"What we want to do is stimulate discussion and remind people that culture doesn't have to be scary. Hey, it can even be fun."

The series has already attracted attention from the cultural community. A stellar group of organizations and businesses have come on board as co-sponsors including the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Project Literacy, UBCO's Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, Wood Lake Publishing and CKOV-Radio.

"There's obviously an interest here in getting the word out about all things cultural. These partnerships and collaborations bring together organizations with a common cause, and bring life to these events," MacDonald said.

The Imagine Summer series gets underway Thursday, July 5 at 4:30 p.m. with Reminders and Rumours - Readings for Literacy features readings by Dona Sturmanis, Sterling Haynes, Karin Wilson, Jarrod Thalheimer, Stan Sauerwein, and the photographs of Gary Nylander.

Coming up July 12 is Everyday Spirituality, followed by events exploring such themes as The Heart at Home, Nothing Like Naramata, Decorating is Delightful and Okanagan Vernacular. Some events take place after work on Tuesday or Thursday, and others late Saturday morning.

"Culture doesn't take place inside buildings, it takes place inside people's heads," MacDonald said. "It's what we're thinking about, what we care about, what we're talking about -- whether that means talking about writing, or interior decorating, or fine wine. It's what we're creating, and what we're enjoying when we step outside our workday world. Summer is the perfect time to stop and think creatively, and to explore what culture means to ourselves and our community."

The Okanagan Institute works to enhance the quality of cultural life in the Okanagan through publications and events. For more information about the series, pick up a flyer at Mosaic Books, or visit the Okanagan Institute website at www.okanaganinstitute.com.
