Architecture showcase reveals the secrets of Okanagan home design

One look around the Okanagan and you know everyone is either building, or dreaming, about their perfect home. Whether that means crafting a custom home from scratch, or putting the final touches into the interior, there is no doubt home is where a large part of our attention is focussed these days.

Building Dreams takes place October 11 at 4:30 pm at Mosaic Books as part of the Re:Imagine series presented by the Okanagan Institute. The afternoon hour brings together experts from three local companies who have devoted their lives to making our dream homes come true.

Dona Sturmanis, editor of Okanagan Home and well-known local writer, sets the tone for the event, offering up her personal observations on how architecture has evolved in the region.

Jim Meiklejohn is a renowed Okanagan architect who played an integral role in designing one of Kelowna's first urban homescapes - the Cannery Lofts. He's also put his own particular stamp on numerous public buildings around this region - from the new Kelowna Secondary School to faculty offices at UBCO and the spectacular Holiday Inn at Apex Mountain.

Local builder Miles Krahn of Meadow Ridge Homes is the man behind such premier developments as Wilden and The Quarry. Krahn says the key to crafting a beautiful home lies in the communication between client and builder. He'll walk you through exactly what to expect.

Paulette & Andrea Harte of Habitat Interiors are designers extraordinaire. With backgrounds in both fine arts and design, this mother and daughter team offers a rich understanding of the world palette as a result of their own travels though India, South Africa, Asia and Europe. These women will help you see your home in a new light.

Okanagan Institute Building Dreams: Okanagan Architecture is a free event, and takes place at Mosaic Books, Kelowna's independent bookstore. It's presented by the Okanagan Institute in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q.

Re:Imagine is sponsored by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, UBCO Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and supports the work of Project Literacy Kelowna.
