The eclectic world of Naramata comes to Kelowna

Even today amidst the crowded rows of vineyards and tourist onslaught few in the Okanagan question that people do things a little differently in Naramata.

Maybe it's the pioneer roots, maybe it's the beauty or even the geographical location. Whatever it is, there is something about Naramata that draws artists, writers, environmentalists, farmers and now the new generation of wine gentry to this eastern shore of Okanagan Lake.

This Thursday, September 6 Okanagan Institute continues its Imagine Summer series underway at Mosaic Books with The View from Naramata - an exploration into how place influences our lives and our art through the eyes of writer Melody Hessing and artist Frances Hatfield.

These two remarkable women were once neighbours living in the farthest reaches of Naramata. Over the years, they learned how the place subtly influenced their experience of community, their art, and even their friendship. They experienced the hardship of isolation during hard winters, and the beauty and power of their natural environment.

Frances Hatfield, who now lives in Armstrong, spent 21 years in Naramata living and working as an artist. She was convinced to come after a stint teaching at the Kootenay School of Art back in 1972. "I fell in love with Naramata," she says. "It was much more of an orchard place then and it suited me well living up in the bush." A true pioneer spirit, Hatfield built her own house, including a pottery studio and it was shortly after that she met Hessing.

Melody Hessing is the author of numerous books on the environment, including This Elusive Land: Women and the Canadian Environment. Like Hatfield, Hessing arrived in 1972, but as a refuge from Vancouver. "It felt like the last outpost of colonialism," she says. "But there was also a real sense of the natural world and it created a cohesion to the place."

The View from Naramata is a free event, and takes place at 4:30 pm. It's put on in association with the magazines of Wheat King Publishing - Okanagan Arts, Okanagan Home, and Okanagan Q. Imagine Summer is sponsored by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, Wood Lake Books, CKOV Radio, UBCO Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, and supports the work of Project Literacy Kelowna.

Imagine Summer morphs into Imagine Autumn on September 20, as the weekly series of presentations, workshops and seminars continues to present the works and ideas of leading Okanagan creative individuals.
