Celebrating BC's Seasons of Abundance. Judie Steeves From the coast of British Columbia to the wilds of the Cariboo and the orchards and vineyards of the Okanagan. 200 recipes including adaptations of traditional dishes from family and friends, with a focus on using fresh, local ingredients, in season to produce nutritious, simple, good food all year long.
This long awaited cookbook focuses on using local and in-season ingredients to prepare simple, nutritious recipes using local products as they are available through the year. It takes cooks from the first sprouts of spring through the bounty of summer fruits and vegetables, autumn harvest and the comfort foods of winter. The book spans the range of regional cuisines from the bounty of the Pacific Ocean to the berries of the Fraser Valley, the whole grains of the Peace region, the beef and lamb of the Cariboo rangelands and the cornucopia provided by the orchards and vineyards of the Okanagan. These simple-to-make recipes include starters, soups, entrees and desserts - all perfect for the family and for casual entertaining. As an added bonus, well-known wine writer John Schreiner has contributed wine pairing notes that accompany many of the recipes. "I frequently get calls from readers asking where they can pick up my book and one has even offered to help me put one together! I've lived in different areas of B.C., so my recipes reflect that, with fresh seafood and fish from the coast, blueberries and fresh produce from the Fraser Valley, wild game meats and fresh breads from the wilderness and a wood cook stove I used while we lived in the Cariboo, and the fresh fruits, wines and herbs from the Okanagan where I grew up and have lived for the past 27 years or so. "I feel it's vital we support local farmers and enjoy the fruit of their labours to sustain both them and our families, for both health, flavour and for economic reasons. This book is a celebration of the diversity of our agricultural sector in BC. I am not a chef. I am not a nutritionist. I am not a nurse or a fitness instructor. I am a writer, a mom, a grandmother and a gardener who loves to eat good food and serve it to others who appreciate fresh flavours. Some of the recipes are simply traditional old favourites passed down in the family, but ones which I know my grown kids, for instance, would like to have. This book is my legacy to them, and to others who like to cook and appreciate eating healthy, flavourful food." - Judie Steeves
