Curators Discuss the Changing World of the Public Art Gallery
To curate means to select, organize and look after objects in a collection or exhibit. However, the task of a curator or director of a public art gallery is much more complicated than this simple definition. Public art galleries hold a special place in their communities. They showcase the work of local and national artists, they facilitate dialogue with their communities, providing educational art experiences for all ages. How a public art gallery is curated is a reflection of their social and geographical climate, of the resources of their facilities and staff, of the support they receive from their communities and other funding bodies.
On Wednesday, August 18th at 7 pm the alternate weekly Okanagan Institute Showcase series at the Kalamalka Café, Okanagan College, Vernon presents The Culture of Curation: the Collections and Exhibitions of Public Art Galleries. Join us as curators and directors Paul Crawford, Nataley Nagy and Lubos Culen discuss the challenges of curating for their communities while also participating in a Canada-wide dialogue on contemporary art.
Paul Crawford is the current Director/Curator of the Penticton Art Gallery having arrived in the Okanagan in the fall of 2006. Previously he was the Director/Curator at the Grand Forks Art Gallery from 2002 - 2006. He is also known across the province as a writer, social historian, art consultant and past private gallery owner. His love of art has led him to amass a collection of over 1500 works mainly featuring the work of Canadian artists. Paul Crawford is the founder of the International One Minute Play Festival and a co-producer of the annual ArtsWells Festival. He currently sits on the board of Island Mountain Arts in Wells, BC and has been recently invited to sit on the board of the Joe Plaskett Foundation.
Nataley Nagy has over 23 years experience in the visual arts sector. She is an alumnus of the Getty Leadership Institute (2007) and the Banff Arts Administration Training Program (1984). Before moving to Kelowna to take on the position of Executive Director of the Kelowna Art Gallery, Nagy was the Executive Director of the Textile Museum of Canada (2002-2009) where she oversaw the digitization of the Museum's Permanent Collection of over 12,000 artifacts. She managed a wide variety of complex art projects in her roles as Director of Galerie SAW Gallery/SAW Video (1984-1988), Arts Officer at the Ontario Arts Council (1988-93), and as Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Windsor (1993-2001). During her tenure at the Art Gallery of Windsor, Nataley oversaw the capital campaign and building project that relocated the AGW first into a six-year interim location in a regional shopping centre and then, into a new purpose-built $27million facility. She received an Honorary Doctorate for her contributions to arts and culture from the University of Windsor. Nagy has also worked independently assisting with visual art projects at the City of Hamilton, the City of Detroit and the Toronto Zoo. In addition to her Board duties at the Canadian Museums Association, Nataley is a member of the Board of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries and a member of Canadian Art Museum Directors' Association.
Lubos Culen is an artist and curator based in Vernon, BC. Most of his writing and curatorial work is focused on contemporary art production. His studio practice is concerned with the examination of the inevitable conditions associated with the human conflict reflecting the existential factor of human experience.
